FIU’s Skye Carey and Rebecca Quesnel Named C-USA Swimmer and Diver of the Week

 By Paul Dodson

IRVING, Texas (Jan. 5, 2016) – For the third time this season FIU swept this week’s Conference USA weekly honors as Skye Carey and Rebecca Quesnel were named the C-USA Swimmer and Diver of the Week, respectively, the league announced on Tuesday.

Carey helped FIU to a second place finish in the FIU Sprint Invite this past weekend. The native of Satellite Beach, Fla., had a strong showing, winning the 50-yard backstroke with a personal-best time of 26.93. She also placed third in the 100-yard backstroke with another personal-best time of 58.21. Carey finished fifth in the 200-yard freestyle with a 1:53.10. With a ninth-place finish in the 100 IM and a 10th-place result in the 100-yard freestyle, Carey completed the afternoon, with a sixth-place finish in the 200-yard freestyle relay (1:41.18) scoring a 24.33 on the second leg.

Quesnel won both the 3-meter and 1-meter diving events during Sunday’s invite. The first-place finishes were the sixth and seventh of the season for the Burlington, Ontario, native. Quesnel scored a 283.90 in the 1-meter dive (her third-best score of the season), marking the fourth time she scored 280 points-or-better this year. The mark was also the third-highest in the conference this season, bested only by two other scores Quesnel posted earlier in the year. She also added a 290.15 in the 3-meter dive (her fourth 290+ point outing). The score was the sixth-best in the conference this season as Quesnel has recorded four of the top six scores in the 3-meter in Conference USA this season.

The honor marks the first C-USA weekly honor for Pereira and ninth of Quesnel’s career.

The Panthers will next take on Kansas and N.C State in the FIU Tri-Meet on Friday, Jan. 8. The event is scheduled to start at 3 p.m. ET from the Biscayne Bay Aquatic Center.
