Florida International University Sweeps Second Day of Dual-A-Palooza; Moves to 5-0 on the Year

MIAMI (Oct. 17, 2015) – The FIU swimming and diving team remained perfect on the year, sweeping the second day of Dual-A-Palooza with wins over Florida Atlantic (138-62) and No. 24 Miami (Fla.) (122-83) from Gulliver Prep on Saturday, Oct. 17.
“This weekend was a total team effort,” Head Coach Randy Horner said. “The girls stepped up and competed extremely well over all three meets. I feel like we have taken a step forward in our goal to repeat this season. Now, back to work”
FIU began the day with a 138-62 win over Florida Atlantic. The Panthers took first-place in nine of the 11 events in the session.
Sophomore Kyna Pereira led the way with a pair of first-place finishes, claiming the 200-Yard Backstroke (2:03.47) and the 200-Yard Freestyle (1:53.38). Senior Jessica Piper tied Pereira in the 200 Free, equaling her time of 1:53.38. Sophomore Naomi Ruele took first in the 100-Yard Freestyle (52.48 – a C-USA season-best), while senior Jessica Chadwick won the 500-Yard Freestyle (5:02.76) and sophomore Letizia Bertelli won the 50-Yard Butterfly (25.66).
In the three-meter dive, sophomore Rebecca Quesnel placed first with a score of 292.45.
The team of Bertelli, Ruele, Skye Carey and Jennifer Deist won the 200-Yard Freestyle Relay (1:36.40), while Ruele, Chase Harris, Bertelli and Ally Mayhew claimed the 200-Yard Medley Relay (1:46.08).
FIU closed out Dual-A-Palooza versus Miami (Fla.), defeating the Hurricanes 122-83. The Panthers placed first in seven of the 11 events in the session to knock off the Hurricanes for the second-straight meet.
Pereira took first in two events as the second-year Panther scored first in the 1000-yard Freestyle (10:09.58) and the 200-Yard Freestyle (1:50.38). The Umkomaas, South Africa, native went a perfect 8-0 in events that she swam in this weekend. Chadwick claimed a pair of first-place finishes in the 100-Yard Individual Medley (58.63) and 200-Yard Breaststroke (2:20.77). Harris finished first in the 50-Yard Breaststroke (30.49).
FIU won the 100-Yard Medley Relay as Ruele, Harris, Bertelli and Mayhew recorded a time of 49.22. The team of Ruele, Bertelli, Deist and Pereira registered a 3:26.12 in the 400-Yard Freestyle Relay for the win.
FIU has now claimed 16-straight dual meets and has improved to 5-0 on the year.
The Panthers will next host Illinois on Nov. 6 from the Biscayne Bay Aquatic Center. The meet is set for 5 p.m.
