CHARLOTTE, N.C. – For the second time this season, the FGCU swimming and diving team swept the CCSA weekly awards as Elise Haan was named the Women’s Swimmer of the Week and Ashley Wright was named the Women’s Diver of the Week, league officials announced Tuesday afternoon.
“I’m happy for both girls to once again receive the recognition they deserve,” said FGCU head coach Neal Studd. “Their efforts were critical in a pair of tough road wins in Utah. They’re working hard every day, and it shows.”
Haan (Naples, Fla./Gulf Coast HS) won the award for the second consecutive week after earning a pair of individual wins in the 100-yard and 200-yard backstrokes. The Naples native touched the pads in times of 54.70 seconds and 2:02.39, respectively, as she improved her individual record to 4-0 to start her collegiate career. Haan swam a NCAA ‘B’ cut time in the 100-yard event for the second straight week and defeated the field in the 200-yard backstroke by nearly four seconds. Additionally, she swam the final leg as a member of the 400-yard freestyle relay team that finished runner-up behind Boise State in a time of 2:29.69. Haan’s 100-yard split of 52.17 seconds was the fastest among FGCU swimmers and the fifth-fastest overall in the event.
Wright (Port Saint Lucie, Fla./Lincoln Park Academy/Indian River), who was also named the CCSA Diver of the Week following her performance in the season-opening All Florida Invite, turned in a pair of top-three finishes and season-best efforts in Salt Lake City last Friday. The junior transfer finished runner-up off the one-meter board after turning in a score of 272.33 points and followed it with a 272.55-point effort off the three-meter board, good for a third-place finish. Both performances cracked FGCU’s record book as Wright now holds the fourth-best and eighth-best scores in program history. Additionally, her score off the short board surpassed the NCAA diving standard score of 265 points and qualified her for the 2016 NCAA Championships.
The pair of awards mark the sixth time in only five weeks of competition the Green and Blue have received weekly distinction this season. In addition to the four individual accolades between Haan and Wright, Katie Armitage (Bushey, United Kingdom/Queens School Bushey) took home Swimmer of the Week honors following FGCU’s trip to the Swamp, marking the other instance this season the Green and Blue swept the weekly awards. Following the FGCU Classic, Barbara Caraballo (Ponce, Puerto Rico/Indian River/Newsome HS)earned Swimmer of the Week distinction after contributing to three relay victories.
The No. 25 Eagles will travel to Tallahassee, Fla. to take on FSU and Florida Southern in a two-day tri-meet scheduled for Friday Nov. 6 at 5 p.m. and Saturday Nov. 7 at 10 a.m.
