Sydney Pickrem, Caeleb Dressel Win on Day 3 of the SEC Championships

Columbia, MO—The third day of competition at the Southeastern Conference Championships in Columbia, Missouri was a great day for Floridians Sydney Pickrem and Caeleb Dressel. After Day 2, the University of Tennessee Lady Volunteers were just a handful of points in front of the defending champion Georgia Bulldogs. For the men, the defending champion Florida Gators had just 7 points on Auburn.
The 400 Individual Medley women started the night with Clearwater’s Sydney Pickrem (TXAM) come from behind win with a speedy time of 4:05.32, Lauren Driscoll (TN) swam a 4:09.15 for 6th, and Jessica Thielmann (UF) rounded out the A Final with a 4:10.59.
Mark Szaranek (UF) had a huge last freestyle leg to finish second in the IM with a 3:41.88 and Alex Lebed (UF) 8th with a 3:46.79. Arthur Frayler, the lone B Final swimmer for Florida swam a 3:48.70, good for place 13th place.
In the evening’s 2nd event, the 100 Butterfly, Natalie Hinds (UF) sprinted to a great finish for the Gators with a time of 51.87. Harper Bruens (TN) also in the big final, swam a 52.99 for 8th.
Over in the men’s 100 Butterfly, Caeleb Dressel (UF) won another one, going 44.80 (out in 20.44) to destroy the field and add an SEC Meet Record. Jan Switkowski’s (UF) swam a 46.16 and got him a 4th for decent point gain for the Gators. Jack Blzinskyj (UF), swimming in the B Final, went 47.02, getting him 13th in the event.
The women’s 3 Meter Springboard Final was in between the 100 Fly and 200 Free with Florida Gator’s Kahlia Warner as the top diver after the 1 Meter win. After dominating a 3.5 sommersault in a tuck position with scores of 9’s, that dive vaulted her from 4th to the top spot half way through the competition. Warner ended up holding off Cassie Weil to win for the second time this week, 383.75 to 372.55, respectively.
The final event of the evening, the 200 Freestyle, defending champion Amelia Maughan (UF) started to run the field down but didn’t have enough pool, finishing 4th with a 1:45.76, while Claire Rasmus (TXAM) swam a 1:46.49 for the 7th spot.
Pawel Werner (UF) former champion in this event had a great race in the B Final with a win and 1:34.99. In the final race of Day 2, Mitch D’Arrigo (UF) 2015 runner-up finished 4th in the A Final with a 1:34.26.
